Whether they are special solutions with 60 % TC in nickel-based or Stellite materials or directly HIPed barrels – all our barrels are manufactured with extremely robust, cutting-edge CNC machines in a highly efficient manner. Our success in this area proves us right.
We distinguish between three basic construction forms of the barrels: Massive barrels are usually manufactured as one-piece nitriding-steel barrels or fully-throughhardened barrels; there are no liners or thick wear protection layers involved. Lined barrels are always made of several pieces, have a "soft" outer body and usually an integrated cooling system; inside, there are round or oval liners shrunk into the body which ensure the wear protection. Direct HIP are also one-piece barrels; the outer body is made of non-hardenable steel, and in the two parallel bores a highly wear-resistant coating has developed, due to the HIPing of a thick powder layer (usually approx. 2-3mm).

Whether it's about plastic, food or animal feed – extruders have to perform well and endure a lot, since the speed and continuous load turn compounding into a back-breaking job for any screw element. And there are more than enough aggressors: acid, heat, abrasive materials and challenging process conditions put extreme stress on the material.
However, Extruder Experts screw elements remain surprisingly unaffected by all this. Firstly, because they are made of materials that are perfectly adapted to the respective processes. Secondly, because their finishing is excellent. Every single detail is meticulously planned and built. For every screw element, every conveying and backward feeding element and every thrust edge element. Thirdly, because screw elements by Extruder Experts are well ahead in terms of technology and offer amazing performance. For instance, they cannot only convey a compound forward reliably, but also – by means of re-conveying – hold back, disperse, homogenize, plasticize or degas the compound in the extruder, build up pressure, or simply enhance the feeding of the raw materials into the machine. Good luck trying to find more versatile screws than ours!
But what if that’s simply not enough? For example, because the extrusion of food and feed creates enormous strain on the screw flights? Don’t panic! Extruder Experts offer bars that consist of a layer with a cobalt or nickel base and of additional hard materials.

This poses a dilemma for many manufacturers: if they opt for the cheapest solution, the shaft will fail soon and bring the machine to a stop. A disaster for the customer – and a real challenge for Extruder Experts. Because we have to make that decision, too. Expensive or cheap? As an expert and partner for our customers, we can only accept the first option. That means we exclusively process specially heat-treated, high-alloy tool steel for shafts as standard.
A luxury? Maybe, but one that pays off for our customers. Because it makes shafts by Extruder Experts as insensitive as possible against reversed bending stress in case of superimposed high torsion. But our protection measures do not end there. We also strengthen shafts which are exposed to particularly high corrosion stress, by means of a corrosion-resistant special material.
